Patagonia: A Leader in Corporate Philanthropy

Patagonia is an outdoor clothing company with a long history of environmental activism and corporate philanthropy. The company has donated over $100 million to environmental causes and has given away 1% of all sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural world.

In 2018, Patagonia changed the company’s purpose to: "We’re in business to save our home planet".

In 2022, Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard donated 98% of his non-voting shares in the company to a nonprofit called the Holdfast Collective. The Holdfast Collective is a trust created to protect the firm’s values and dedicated to fighting the environmental crisis and defending nature. Yvon said:

“As of now, Earth is our only shareholder. ALL profits, in perpetuity, will go to our mission to 'save our home planet'.”

Patagonia's corporate philanthropy is rooted in the company's belief that businesses have a responsibility to use their resources to make a positive impact on the world. The company's giving program is designed to support organisations that are working to address the root causes of environmental problems.

Patagonia's corporate philanthropy has made a difference by:

  • Funding groundbreaking research into climate change, renewable energy, and other environmental issues. This research has helped to inform policy decisions and to raise awareness of the challenges facing the planet.

  • Supporting innovative advocacy campaigns: that are working to protect public lands, fight climate change, and promote environmental justice. These campaigns have helped to build public support for environmental protections and to hold governments accountable.

  • Funding on-the-ground conservation efforts: that are working to protect wildlife, restore habitats, and conserve natural resources. These efforts have made a real difference and have helped to preserve some of the world's most precious places.
